You can now turn your boat to a Windy.com weather station through Saillogger
-
Weather reports are important and as boaters, I think we all know how they accurate they are!
It appears that one of the main reasons of this is that there is not enough data and the data is often unreliable (Read more: Why Marine Weather Forecasts Are So Inaccurate - And How To Improve Them).
So as Saillogger, we introduced a new feature to make it super easy for you to share your own data and make your boat a moving Windy.com weather station!
When you go to your settings, you will now see the option to turn your boat into a weather station under public profile.
This feature requires a few things:
-
You need to use Saillogger plugin version 2.3.0 or later
-
You must configure monitoring data source for wind direction as
environment.wind.directionTrue
on Saillogger plugin, which is the default starting with 2.3.0. This is necessary because reporting apparent wind directions to Windy will be very confusing for those who are processing it. -
Data for
environment.wind.directionTrue
will likely be unavailable in your NMEA network, which is expected. You can use the derived-data plugin to easily calculate it. -
You need to have outdoor temperature coming through
environment.outside.temperature
. This is required as Windy.com doesn't accept observations that don't include temperature readings. -
While not enforced through the user interface, we highly recommend to use
environment.wind.speedTrue
for wind speed. This won't matter at anchor or a marina but will matter when you are underway.
